Van Halen formed in 1973 when Broken Combs members Eddie Van Halen (guitar, keyboards), Alex Van Halen (drums) and Michael Anthony (bass) were joined by vocalist David Lee Roth.

They changed their name to Mammoth and began extensive gigging in the LA club scene. Gene Simmons of Kiss saw one of their shows and produced a Mammoth demo, but it was refused by many major US labels. The existence of another band called Mammoth led them to change their name to Rat Salad, and then, Van Halen. Simmons recommended producer Ted Templeman to see the band and it was Templemen who got them signed to Warner Brothers Records.

Their self titled debut was released in 1978 and received acclaim for Eddie Van Halen's groundbreaking and dazzling guitar playing. It sold 2 million copies within a year and featured the rock radio hits "You Really Got Me," "Jamie's Cryin'," and "Runnin' With the Devil." Their follow-up, Van Halen II, was equally successful and featured the hit "Dance the Night Away." Van Halen's subsequent albums were the moderately successful Women And Children First, Fair Warning and Diver Down. 1984 was their comeback album and this massive success contained the hits "Jump," "I'll Wait," "Panama," and "Hot for Teacher."

David Lee Roth quit Van Halen in 1985 and ex-Montrose singer Sammy Hagar replaced him. Their next album, 5150, was released in 1986 and was another success, actually selling more copies than 1984. It featured the hits "Why Can't This Be Love," "Dreams," and "Love Walks In." It was followed up by more big albums, OU812, featuring "When It's Love" and "Finish What You Started," and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, featuring "Right Now," and Balance.

Van Halen invited David Lee Roth to record two new songs for the Best Of Volume 1 and Hagar left in 1996. It was announced David Lee Roth would be rejoining but a few months later he was out again. Gary Cherone of Extreme became Van Halen's new singer, but only released one album with the band, 1998's flop Van Halen III, before he was fired.
