Thomas Earl Petty was born on October 20, 1950 in Gainesville, Florida. etty did not have any musical aspirations before Elvis Presley visited his hometown.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' roots are in the group Mudcrutch, which Tom Petty (vocals, guitar) joined in 1970. Mudcrutch also featured future Heartbreakers Mike Campbell (guitar) and Benmont Tench (keyboard). The band broke up and Petty eventually signed with Leon Russell's Shelter Records in 1975. Campbell and Tench rejoined him in the Heartbreakers along with bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch. Their 1976 self titled debut album first became a hit in England and hit in the US after the song "Breakdown" became a hit. "American Girl" was also a popular radio track. It went gold as did the follow up, You're Gonna Get It, featuring the singles "I Need To Know" and "Listen To Her Heart."

1979's Damn The Torpedoes was the group's breakthrough. It received critical raves and went double platinum on the strength of the big hits "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Refugee" (co-written with Campbell). 1981's Hard Promises, with The Waiting, and 1982's Long After Dark, with You Got Lucky, were also platinum sellers. Also in 1981 Tom Petty had another hit, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," which was sung with Stevie Nicks. It came from her Bella Donna album and was co-written by Petty and Campbell. Following the release of Long After Dark, Ron Blair left the band and was replaced by Howie Epstein.

Their next album, Southern Accents, was finally released in 1985. It was another platinum album and featured the hit "Don't Come Around Here No More." Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers supported the album with a tour with Bob Dylan, where they also played as Dylan's backing band. Dylan appeared on "Jammin' Me," the first single from their 1987 album Let Me Up (I've Had Enough). The following year, Petty appeared in The Traveling Wilburys, a supergroup with Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne.

Tom Petty's next album, 1989's Full Moon Fever, would be his first credited as a solo artist. The Heartbreakers appeared throughout the album and it was co-produced and written with Jeff Lynne. Full Moon Fever was his biggest album to date, featuring the big hits "I Won't Back Down," "Runnin' Down A Dream" (co-written with Campbell), and the huge "Free Fallin'." Jeff Lynne also co-produced 1991's Into The Great Wide Open for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. The album had another hit, "Learning To Fly."

1993's Greatest Hits featured two new songs produced by Rick Rubin, including the hit "Mary Jane's Last Dance." Petty released another solo album, 1994's Wildflowers, again produced by Rick Rubin. It was as big of a seller as Full Moon Fever and had the hits "You Don't Know How It Feels," "You Wreck Me" and "It's Good To Be King." He reunited with the Heartbreakers for 1996's gold selling She's The One soundtrack, 1999's Echo, and 2002's The Last DJ.
