The Cure are one of the pioneers of Goth Rock, and probably the most iconic group of the genre. They formed in 1976 with Robert Smith (guitar, vocals), Michael Dempsey (bass) and Laurence "Lol" Tolhurst (drums). The Cure's first single was 1978's "Killing An Arab", based on an Albert Camus novel. It was released on the independent Small Wonder Records. The single was enough of an underground success that they were signed to Fiction Records, who reissued "Killing An Arab" in 1979. Their next single, "Boys Don't Cry", was bigger yet and became The Cure's signature song during their early period.

The group released albums that were cult successes throughout the 80's, with their sound getting darker and more dirge-like with each release. In 1986 The Cure released Standing On A Beach: The Singles, which was their first album to go gold. Their next album, 1987's Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, would be their biggest to date. It had four hits: "Why Can't I Be You," "Just like Heaven," "Catch," and "Hot Hot Hot!!!". Their follow up album, 1989's Disintegration, was also a success, yielding their biggest UK and US hits ("Lullaby" and "Lovesong", respectively). The Cure's next album, 1992's Wish, had two more hits: "High" and "Friday I'm in Love." They continued to release albums sporadically with 1996's Wild Mood Swings and 2000's Bloodflowers.
