The Cranberries originally formed as the Cranberry Saw Us in 1990 with Noel Hogan (guitar), Mike Hogan (bass), Fergal Lawler (drums) and Niall (vocals).

Niall left and was replaced with Dolores O'Riordan. The group changed their name to the Cranberries and released the "Uncertain" single in 1991 on Xeric Records. They signed to Island Records on the strength of a demo tape that featured future hits "Dreams" and "Linger." The Cranberries' debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, was released in the 1993. Singles for "Dreams" and "Linger" were released to little success initially. MTV began airing "Linger" later in the year and it became a US Modern Rock hit, reaching #4. "Dreams" also reached #14 on the Modern Rock charts in 1993. By 1994 "Linger" entered the US Top 10 and the UK Top 20 and the album went to #1 in the UK and the US Top 20. The follow up, No Need to Argue, debuted at #6 on the US charts and reached #2 in the UK, eventually outselling it's predecessor. "Zombie" and "Ode to My Family" were both Modern Rock hits. Their third album, 1998's To The Faithful Departed, also reached the UK and US Top 5. "Salvation" topped the US Modern Rock charts and "Free to Decide" reached #8. 1999's Bury The Hatchet reached the US Top 20 and the UK Top 10. Promises was a UK Top 20 and US Modern Rock Top 20 hit. The Cranberries released another album in 2001, Wake Up And Smell The Coffee.
