No Doubt Biography:
No Doubt originally formed as a ska band in 1987 with Gwen Stefani (vocals), John Spence (vocals) and Eric Stefani (keyboards). Bassist Tony Kanal also joined, but Spence committed suicide towards the end of the year.
The band continued with Gwen Stefani handling all vocals and eventually they added guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young. The band signed with Interscope Records in 1991. Their self-titled debut did not sell well and Interscope put support for the band on hold. Eric Stefani left in 1993 to become a professional animator. They self released The Beacon Street Collection in 1995, and recording for Interscope resumed. Their second Interscope album, Tragic Kingdom was also released that year, initially to little success, but the single "Just A Girl" eventually became a hit. The album ended up spending nine weeks at number 1 when "Don't Speak" became a huge hit. Their success continued with Return Of Saturn and the singles "Ex-Girlfriend" and "Simple Kind of Life." The follow up, Rock Steady, was another success with the hits "Hey Baby" and "Underneath It All".
