Nine Inch Nail's albums are mostly the work of Trent Reznor, with guest musicians from his touring bands. NIN began in 1988 with the heavily electronic album Pretty Hate Machine and it had an alternative hit, "Head Like A Hole".

The follow up Broken EP added aggressive guitars to the mix and also had a popular song, "Wish". 1994's The Downward Spiral was NIN's biggest release yet, garnering great critical acclaim and the big hits, "Closer to God" and "Hurt". The following year a remix album, Further Down the Spiral, was released and that was a hit too.

Reznor spent the next few years on other projects, including producing the soundtracks for Oliver Stone's movie Natural Born Killers, and then David Lynch's Lost Highway. NIN finally returned with an album of new material in 1999, a double set called The Fragile, which was another acclaimed album.
