Metallica Biography:
Metallica was formed in 1981 in California by Lars Ulrich (drums) and James Hetfield (guitar/vocals). They recorded their first demo, No Life Til' Leather, with Lloyd Grand (guitar), who was replaced in January 1982 by Dave Mustaine. At the end of 1982, Cliff Burton (bass) joined the band.
Mustaine departed to form Megadeth and was replaced by Kirk Hammett. Metallica released 1983's Kill 'Em All and 1984's Ride the Lightning on independent labels and toured with thr British heavy metal bands Raven and Venom. Metallica signed with Elektra Records and released 1986's Master Of Puppets (Elektra also re-released their previous two albums). Tragedy struck the band while touring for the album when their tour bus crashed, killing Burton. The band decided to continue after the death of Burton. Jason Newsted (b. 4 March 1963, Battle Creek, Michigan, USA; bass) of Flotsam And Jetsam joined on bass. The new line-up's first recording together was The $5.98 EP - Garage Days Re-Revisited, a collection of cover versions including material from Budgie, Diamond Head, Killing Joke and the Misfits.

In 1988, Metallica released ...And Justice for All, which hit the Top Ten and for which they produced their first MTV video. Metallica fully entered the mainstream with 1991's Metallica, which featured more concise song structures than previous albums; it resulted in a number one album that sold over thirteen million copies in the U.S. alone. However, the group lost some members of their core audience with their long-awaited follow-up to Metallica, 1996's Load. For Load, the band decided to move toward alternative rock, they cut their hair, headlined the sixth Lollapalooza Tour and the album was slightly less harder edged. The following year's Reload collected together more tracks recorded at the Load sessions, and was hailed by fans a return to metal. Garage Inc., a double-disc collection of B-sides, rarities, and newly recorded covers, followed in 1998. In 1999, Metallica released S&M, documenting a live concert with the San Francisco Symphony. In 2001, Newsted announced he was amicably leaving the band.
