Jefferson Airplane formed in 1965 with Marty Balin (vocals, guitar), Paul Kantner (guitar, vocals), Jorma Kaukonen (guitar, vocals), Signe Anderson (vocals), and later, Skip Spence (drums) and Jack Casady (bass).

They signed to RCA records and their debut album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, was released in 1966. Spence and Anderson left and were replaced by Spencer Dryden and Great Society singer Grace Slick. The Airplane re-recorded two Great Society songs, "White Rabbit" and "Somebody To Love," for their second album, 1967's Surrealistic Pillow. Both songs and the album became US Top 10 hits. 1968 saw the release of the more experimental After Bathing At Baxter's album, which was less successful although it did make the US Top 20. Their third album, also from 1968, Crown Of Creation was an acclaimed gold selling hit which made it to US number 6. It was followed up by the 1969 live album, Bless Its Pointed Little Head.

1969's politically charge Volunteers also received great acclaim and went gold, but was followed by personnel changes and side projects. Dryden left after the album and was replaced by Joey Covington. Casady and Kaukonen formed a side band, Hot Tuna. Fiddler Papa John Creach from Hot Tuna joined Jefferson Airplane in 1970. Kantner released an album at the end of 1970, Blows Against The Empire, credited to Paul Kantner And The Jefferson Starship. Balin left Jefferson Airplane in 1971 and was replaced by David Freiberg. Two more gold albums followed, Bark and Long John Silver. Coving left and was replaced by John Barbata for the 1973 live album, 30 Seconds Over Winterland. The live album was the last to use the Jefferson Airplane name. After Kaukonen and Casady left, the group name changed to Jefferson Starship. Kaukonen and Casady were replaced by guitarist Craig Chaquico and bassist Pete Sears.

The first Jefferson Starship album was the 1974 hit, Dragonfly. Balin returned at the beginning of 1975. The following album, Red Octopus, became their most successful release and was number 1 in the US for over a month. It featured the US number 3 hit "Miracles." 1976's Spitfire and 1978's Earth (featuring "Count On Me") were both US Top 5 hits, and featured a more commercial hard rock sound. Slick and Balin left in 1978. Balin was replaced by Mickey Thomas and drummer Aynsley Dunbar replaced Barbata. Freedom From Point Zero (featuring "Jane") was another success, although Kantner was the only remaining original Jefferson Airplane member. Grace Slick returned to the band and both 1981's Modern Times and 1982's Winds Of Change were moderately successful. Don Baldwin replaced Ainsley Dunbar after Winds of Change. 1984's Nuclear Furniture was Jefferson Airplane's last album.

Kantner left (as did Freiberg) and legally took the Jefferson prefix of the name with him. He reunited with Balin and Casady in the KBC Band. The group continued on as Starship. 1985's Knee Deep In The Hoopla was their most successful album since Red Octopus. It contained two US number 1 hits, "We Built This City" (co-written by Bernie Taupin) and "Sara."

1987's No Protection featured another US and UK Number 1, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," and the US Top 10 "It's Not Over ('Til It's Over)." Grace Slick left in 1989 and joined Kaukonen, Casady, Balin and Kantner for a Jefferson Airplane reunion. Their reunion album was flop and after Starship broke up in the early 90s, Kantner revived the Jefferson Starship name in 1991. The new line-up featured Creach and Casady and new vocalist Darby Gould. Balin joined in 1992 for a tour. Their 1995 live album, Deep Space/Virgin Sky, also featured Grace Slick as a guest. Jefferson Starship's 1999 studio albu, Windows Of Heaven, featured another new vocalist, Diana Mangano.
