Dave Grohl privately began writing and recording songs as a teen. He drummed for the hardcore band Scream in the late 80s and some of his songs appeared on their last album, Fumble. Grohl joined Nirvana as a drummer, but Nirvana only released one of his songs on a single B-side.

Following the death of Kurt Cobain, Grohl recorded a demo of songs written during Nirvana's run. He formed the Foo Fighters with Pat Smear (guitar), Nate Mendel (bass) and William Goldsmith (drums). Their 1995 self titled album consisted of Grohl's solo demos. The album was a success and had three hits, "This Is A Call," "I'll Stick Around," and "Big Me". During the recording of their second album, Goldsmith left and Grohl drummed on the remainder of the album. New drummer Taylor Hawkins joined before their next tour. 1997's The Colour And The Shape was another big album and contained the rock hits "Monkey Wrench," "Everlong," and "My Hero." Smear left following the album's release and was replaced by Grohl's former Scream bandmate, Franz Stahl. However, Stahl left before the recording of their third album, 1999's There Is Nothing Left To Lose, which was recorded as a trio. It contained the big hits, "Learn to Fly" and "Breakout." Guitarist Chris Shiflett joined before the album's tour. The Foo Fighters took a break while Grohl drummed for Queens Of The Stone Age, who released an album in 2002. They returned later that year with One By One, which had the rock hits "All My Life" and "Times Like These."
