Depeche Mode's roots are in 1976 with keyboardists Vince Clarke and Andrew Fletcher forming the group No Romance in China. In 1979 Clarke formed another duo French Look, featuring guitarist/keyboardist Martin Gore. Fletcher soon joined and the group was renamed Composition of Sound. Initially, Clarke was the singer, but in 1980 David Gahan joined as the main vocalist and the band changed their name to Depeche Mode. Their first recording was "Photographic," a track included on the compilation Some Bizzare Album. Depeche Mode signed to Mute Records and issued two singles before their third, "Just Can't Get Enough," became a Top Ten UK hit. Their 1981 debut LP Speak and Spell was also a success.

After the release of the Speak and Spell, songwriter Clarke left to form Yazoo with singer Alison Moyet. Gore took over as principal songwriter and Alan Wilder replaced Clarke on keyboards. Depeche Mode released two more albums, 1982's A Broken Frame and 1983's Construction Time Again, before their commercial and critical breakthrough, Some Great Reward. It featured the song "People Are People" which was a UK and US hit. They continued to have success with 1986's Black Celebration and 1987's Music for the Masses. 1990's Violator was their biggest album yet with three hit singles, "Enjoy the Silence," "Policy of Truth" and "Personal Jesus." Depeche Mode's 1993 LP, Songs of Faith and Devotion, came at alternative music's height and was also huge. They entered a period of inactivity when Wilder left in 1995, and then Gahan had a failed suicide attempt. Depeche Mode returned as a trio with 1997's Ultra and 2001's Exciter.
