David Bowie Biography:
David Robert Jones was born on January 8, 1947) in London, England. David Bowie is a
British rock and roll musician, actor, and artist who has had a profound influence on rock and roll from the 1960s to the present. He is commonly known as the greatest chameleon of music history, constantly changing his musical style to suit the times, while always holding on to his own ideas and creativity. His music career began in the mid-sixties with a string of mod styled backing bands including the King Bees, the Manish Boys and Davey Jones & the Lower Third, all of whom released non-charting singles. Due to the emergence of The Monkees' Davy Jones, he changed his name to David Bowie in 1966. Bowie released three mod singles on Pye, and his self titled debut album was released on Deram Records with little commercial success.

Bowie switched labels to Mercury and in 1969 released his first album to yield a hit, Man of Words, Man of Music. The song "Space Oddity" was released as a single to coincide with the American moon landing and charted in the UK Top 10. Bowie's next album, 1970's The Man Who Sold the World, was the first to have the band that would back him for the next four years. The group featured Mick Ronson (guitar), Michael "Woody" Woodmansey (drums) and Tony Visconti, who temporarily played bass, but would produce Bowie throughout the seventies and then the 2000's. The Man Who Sold the World was a more hard rocking album than anything David Bowie had released previously, but the album was not a commercial success and critics were labeling him a one hit wonder. Bowie changed labels once again, this time to RCA. He released the lighter pop album, Hunky Dory, which contained the hit "Changes".

The development of the glam rock character Ziggy Stardust was a turning point in Bowie's career. The Ziggy Stardust live show featured Bowie in outrageous costumes and makeup with orange spiked hair. The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, his 1972 album and tour, were huge successes. They were also Bowie's first successes in the US. Man of Words, Man of Music was re-released in the US, with a Ziggy Stardust era photo on the cover, and was also a hit. Bowie next released Aladdin Sane in 1973, which yielded another hit, "The Jean Genie". He also produced Lou Reed's Transformer, featuring "Walk on the WIld Side", and Mott the Hoople's All the Young Dudes, for which he wrote the smash title track. Bowie's last album with The Spiders From Mars was the all covers album Pin-Ups.

Diamond Dogs, which was originally conceived as an adaptation of George Orwell's 1984, was released next and contained the hit "Rebel Rebel". Bowie's follow up album had a drastic change in style, it was the neo-soul album Young Americans. The album had two hits, "Fame" and the title track. It was followed up by Station To Station, which also was soul influenced but with darker content and some additional avant garde elements. Bowie's also took on the stage persona of "the Thin White Duke", characterized by a suave, fashionable appearance.

The avant garde elements on Station To Station came to full fruition on Bowie' next four albums. He began collaborating with a leading practitioner of avant garde rock, Brian Eno. Bowie's next two albums, Low and Heroes, even featured mostly instrumental flip sides. They were followed up by 1978's Lodger (featuring D.J., Fashion and Boys Keep Swinging) and 1980's Scary Monsters (featuring Ashes To Ashes).

Bowie did not released any albums for the next three years, instead he focused on film and theater projects. He switched to EMI records in 1983 and unleashed the biggest album of his career, Let's Dance. The album marked another stylistic change, this time featuring upbeat pop produced by Nile Rodgers. It had three hits: the title track, "China Girl" and "Modern Love". The success of his albums declined though the rest of the eighties. Tonight had a hit, Blue Jean, and sold well but was critically panned. His next album, Never Let Me Down, was a bomb with critics and fans, as were two albums with his new hard rock band, Tin Machine.

In the 1990's and 2000's, Bowie reunited with many old collaborators and his albums began receiving strong reviews again, although they never attained the commercial successes of the past. He reunited with Nile Rodgers on 1993's Black Tie White Noise and Brian Eno for 1995's Outside. Bowie incorporated techno music into 1997's Earthling. His 1999 album, The Hours, was frequently compared to Hunky Dory. In 2001 Bowie reunited with producer Tony Visconti, who he had not worked with since the 70's.
Trivia / Timeline:
In 1968 while he was still a struggling artist, Bowie wrote some English lyrics to a French song titled "Comme d'Habitude" (As Usual). His version, "Even a Fool Learns to Love", never did get recorded. But when the French melody caught the attention of Paul Anka, he reworked the lyrics and the song became "My Way". Of course, when Frank Sinatra recorded "My Way" his way, it turned to gold.

Daughter, with Iman, Alexandria Zahra Jones born [15 August 2000]

In a magazine interview, he stated that he met his first wife when they were dating the same man.

He has one son in 1971 with his then-wife Angela Bowie, originally named Zowie - who later changed it to Joe and who is now known as Duncan.

Has family roots in West Wales.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
Contributes "Loving the Alien" to the "Warchild Hope" album. [2003]

In his composition "Slip Away", on his album "Heathen", he makes cryptic references to "The Uncle Floyd Show" (1974), a program popular in the late 1970s and 80s in the New York City area. Broadcast on a local TV station, it featured two puppets, "Oogie" and "Bones Boy", mentioned in the song, as well as the host, "Uncle" Floyd Vivino.

His 1972 album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" came 8th in Classic Rock Magazine's list of the 30 greatest concept albums of all time. [March 2003]
Has performed with (on separate occasions) Queen, Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop and Bing Crosby.

He is consistently listed as one of the richest British born pop stars in the world. Heat magazine listed his earnings for the year 2001 at over $30 million.

Has in common with actor John Hurt - they have both played The Elephant Man.

Turned down the role of Max Zorin for the 1985 James Bond film A View to a Kill (1985), citing his lack of enthusiasm for recent Bond villains.

Cites Little Richard as his first musical influence.

His song "Life on Mars" was covered by Marillion frontman Steve Hogarth and the H Band on the album "Live Spirit: Live Body" (released 2002).

Son: Duncan Haywood Zowie Bowie.

He can play basically any kind of instrument, even performing the excellent sax solo at the end of "Heroes." Although a talented rhythm guitarist, the one aspect of music Bowie finds himself lacking in is as a lead guitarist.

Has recorded with Lou Reed.

He was voted the 39th Greatest Artist in Rock 'n' Roll by Rolling Stone.

Turned down the role of Captain Hook in Hook (1991).

Shares a birthday with fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members Elvis Presley, Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger, and legendary promoter Bill Graham.

Took the pseudonym "David Bowie" to keep himself from being confused with Davy Jones of the Monkees.

25 June 2004 - Had an emergency angioplasty in Germany while on his current tour. The remainder of the tour was obviously cancelled.

Quotations by David Bovie:
"I have nothing to say about the new album. Can I go now?" [during an interview about his new album in 1999]

"Any list of advice I have to offer to a musician always ends with, 'If it itches, go and see a doctor.'" [on getting an honorary degree from Boston's Berklee College of Music]

"I rate Morrissey as one of the best lyricists in Britain. For me, he's up there with Bryan Ferry."

"I'm an instant star; just add water."

"I know about Kylie and Robbie and 'Pop Idol' and stuff like that. You can't get away from that when you hit the [British] shore, so I know all about the cruise ship entertainment aspect of British pop."

"It would be my guess that Madonna is not a very happy woman. From my own experience, having gone through persona changes like that, that kind of clawing need to be the center of attention is not a pleasant place to be."

"Talking about art is like dancing about architecture."
