Half Irish and half German Former model Katherine Marie Heigl was born on November 24, 1978 in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. She has two older brothers, Holt and John; and older sister, Meg. Her brother Jason died when Katherine was young.
Katherine Heigl's career began when she started modeling. Once modeling agency named Wilhelmina, got hold of photos of a then nine-year old Katherine, which had been taken by a visiting aunt for a hair care product she had invented. Katherine appeared in magazine advertisements and a Sears catalogue. She made her television debut with a role in a Cheerios commercial. At the age of 12, she played in "That Night" (1992), her big-screen debut, which starred Juliette Lewis and C. Thomas Howell. In 1993, she appeared in Steven Soderbergh's critically acclaimed Depression-era drama "King of the Hill". Her first leading role is as a rebellious teenager alongside Gérard Depardieu in My Father the Hero (1994).
Katherine played the cello in High School. She graduated from New Canaan High School class of 1996.
In 1995 she played Sarah Ryback, the niece of Steven Seagal's character, in her first "action genre" film Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. During this time, she appeared regularly in magazines such as "Seventeen".
She played in "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" (1992) and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" (1993), soon followed, before she took the lead role in Disney's Wish Upon a Star in 1996.
After graduation from high school, her parents divorced, she moved with her mother into a four-bedroom house in Los Angeles' Malibu Canyon area. Her mother then became her manager. In 1997 Katherine Heigl portrayed Taffy Entwhistle, Rita Hayworth's stand-in, in the movie Stand-ins. Next project was European production Prince Valiant (1997). In 1998, she played with Peter Fonda in a re-working of the classic Shakespearian play The Tempest, set during the American Civil War, Bug Buster (1998), and she starred in the successful horror film, Bride of Chucky. In 1999, Heigl turned her attention to television when she accepted the role of Isabel Evans on the science fiction TV drama Roswell.
During her three-year stint on Roswell, Katherine graced the covers of magazines such as "Maxim", "TV Guide", and "Teen", and was interviewed on "Later with Cynthia Garrett" (1994) and "The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn" (1999). She also played Shelley Fisher in the horror film Valentine (2001) - with David Boreanaz and Denise Richards.
Heigl was cast as Vincent Ventresca's boss in the never aired show Vegas Dick (2003), and Hallmark's telefilm Love Comes Softly (2003). She also returned to horror genre with TBS' Evil Never Dies (2003). Same year, after playing a role in the movie Descendant (2003), Katherine was seen in a number of television works like the NBC thriller Critical Assembly (2003), and Hallmark's anticipated sequel Love's Enduring Promise (2004).
Heigl tried her hand in the ABC/Touchstone's two- hour telepic comedy Romy and Michele: In the Beginning (2005), a prequel to the 1997 feature Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997). Though the show failed to air on ABC, she was happy to have been involved in the film.
