DURING her engagement to Ben Affleck, it was hard to escape Jennifer Lopez. She was splashed on almost every magazine, both for her love life, her style and her career which seemed to be going from strength to strength.
Of course, everyone knows what happened next - the engagement collapsed and the actress's only film of 2003, Gigli, in which she starred alongside her former fiance, racked up a string of Razzie nominations, including Worst Picture, Worst Actress and Worst Screen Couple.

Since then, the 35-year-old has notched up another marriage - to third husband Marc Anthony - a new album - aptly entitled Rebirth - and has a string of films set for release, including An Unfinished Life with Robert Redford and Monster-in-Law, for which she earned a whopping $15m.

First up though is her latest movie Shall We Dance, opening next Friday. Set in the world of ballroom dancing, this time Lopez stars alongside Richard Gere. Clearly she is hoping 2005 spells a fresh start.

``I felt there was a time there, and not just last year but building up, when it was out of control, '' she admits. ``What was this thing that had become me? I didn't like it. ''
It's one reason why Lopez hopes she will now be able to shake of her famous J-Lo tag.

``I'm not J-Lo, she's not a real person. She was just a bit of fun that got really crazy. I've never been anyone but Jennifer.

``I'm at a different point in my life right now. I'm a little bit older and I like to think a little bit wiser and more mature.

I think that's going to be reflected in the choices I make. ''

The native New Yorker asmits spending so much time in the public eye has changed her, especially after having to deal with the reaction to her split.

``I've always had this kind of attitude - maybe it's the Bronx in me - where I've always been out there. I'm very open, I'm a free spirit. But all this business has changed me. It has made me a much more private person. ''

She insists that being the focus of so much attention is not fun: ``It's destructive.

I realise people are interested and it's not about me saying they don't have the right to know about my life.

``But the reason I'm in the public eye is because of what I do, because I'm in a movie or do an album. I just want to get it back on that and not on my life. It isn't fun to have the focus on your personal life, it affects everything.

``This is what I do for a living, this is my life. I'm a singer, I'm an actress, I'm a dancer, '' she says.

``I'm trying to get the focus back on what I do. ''

But taking a supporting role to Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon in Shall We Dance wasn't about trying to lower her profile and letting others take the heat. Lopez plays Paulina, a dance instructor who teaches Gere's bored, overworked lawyer all the right moves. ``It doesn't matter whether it's a small role or a big role as long as it's a good role and something I'll actually enjoy doing, '' she says.

But although she is known as a dancer, ballroom dancing is a world away from the Latino and hip hop world she normally inhabits.

``It was as alien as it could be. Being a dance form, I was naturally able to do some things. But it's such a different art form, it's very technical and just different from any types of dance movement I've ever done. '' Lopez admits that she had to take lessons to look the part and it wasn't until the day she and Gere filmed the tango scene they actually danced together.

``We both somehow pulled it together. It was what was happening to the characters in the scene more than anything else. Those two characters come alive for the first time during that dance. ''

Now that she has finished work on her two next films, Lopez is once again contemplating a live tour to promote her new album, something she's never been able to do in the past because of the pressures of her movie workload.

``Because I work in films it has been hard to map out that amount of time to really do it right, '' she says. ``We'll see if it happens, it's exciting. ''

So, while movies may now have to take a back seat for her live tour plans, she's used to juggling her varied career.
Since first coming to the industry's attention in the bio-pic Selena in 1997 playing the tragic Latin American artist, then to the rest of the world's in Out Of Sight alongside George Clooney, she's enjoyed hugely successful albums, as well as further film success in The Wedding Planner and Maid In Manhattan, not to mention fitting in her high-profile love life. As well as her well-documented relationship with Ben Affleck, there was a high-profile fling with rap mogul Puff Daddy. But there's no doubt that the level of fame she has enjoyed has tested Lopez at times.

``For a girl like me, wearing gorgeous clothes and having all this attention was amazing. It was like being a princess.

``But it didn't take me long to realise that this sort of fame can be scary. The more the circus builds up around you the more you start to lose all those intentions that got you there in the first place. All the hard work starts to get lost in all the crazy stuff. ''
