Biography of Halle Berry
Halle Maria Berry was born on the 14th of August, 1968 (though some insist it was 1966), in Cleveland, Ohio. She was named after the town's Halle Building, which originally housed the Halle Brothers department store but is now an office block (it's also used in the Drew Carey Show). Her father, Jerome, an African American and a hospital attendant by trade, left when she was just four, so she and her elder sister Heidi were raised by their Caucasian, Liverpool-born mother, Judith, herself a nurse in a psychiatric ward. Jerome would return after four years but the violence he directed towards Judith and Heidi meant that he did not stay for long. Throughout her adult life, Halle Would have no contact with him at all, still being estranged when Jerome died in 2003.

Halle's first few years were spent in a black neighbourhood of Cleveland. Here her fair complexion made her stand out, but not as much as she did when her mother moved them out of the inner-city to a mainly white suburb. Now, a little older and in this conservative milieu, her "difference" was not so readily tolerated. "I'm black," she said later. "I realised very early in my life that I wasn't going to be this mulatto stuck in the middle, not knowing if I'm black or white".

To overcome these racial difficulties, Halle threw herself into school activities at Bedford High and tried to make friends. She did well. She was in the Honour Society, a cheerleader, class president, and an editor on the school newspaper. And, naturally, she was Prom Queen. At least, she was joint Prom Queen. Having won outright, she was accused of voting irregularities and (guess what?) forced to share her title with a WASP.

Monster's Ball/O (2004)
Director Tim Blake Nelson sets Shakespeare's OTHELLO in a modern day private high school and the result is a dark, somber teen tragedy. Mekhi Phifer (CLOCKERS) stars as Odin James, an African-American star basketball player at the otherwise all-white school. The coach of the team (Martin Sheen) loves Odin like a son, which causes real son Hugo (Josh Hartnett) to squirm with jealousy and plan an elaborate revenge. Julia Stiles (a modern dress Shakespeare regular, having also co-starred in HAMLET and TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU) portrays Desi, the virginal daughter of the dean, with whom Odin is in love. The ensuing outburst of tragic teen violence is a shocking denouement that elevates the already dangerous mood of the film to full-fledged terror. The film was shelved for years by a nervous Miramax in the wake of the real-life Columbine high school massacre, but Lion's Gate Films eventually picked the movie up and released it. Such concern seems needless in retrospect, since the film does nothing to glorify the violence it depicts, preferring instead to explore themes of class, race, and all-consuming jealousy. Shakespeare's original dialogue is abandoned in favor of hip-hop-flavored modern language, but the tale's timeless relevance remains unaltered.

Quotations by Halle Berry:
The man for me is the cherry on the pie. But I'm the pie and my pie is good all by itself. Even if I don't have a cherry.

I carried my Oscar to bed with me. My first and only three-way happened that night.

I think it's always best to be who you are.

When my husband wears this kind of oil, I'm like a puppy.

The worst thing a man can ever do is kiss me on the first date.

Secretly part of me has always wanted to try cocaine, but I just couldn't imagine sniffing anything up my nose. It seems like that would hurt.

She was actually born in 1966, not 1968.

Suffered an inflamed eye in an accident on the set of the latest James Bond film.

Berry said it was sometimes hard to keep up with Pierce Brosnan in the new James Bond movie DIE ANOTHER DAY – she said one especially tough scene required the pair to run alongside a moving plane. (November 5, 2002)

In DIE ANOTHER DAY Berry outshines the dashing British spy that even Pierce Brosnan himself, who appears for the fourth time as James Bond, is singing the 34 year-old's praises.

Berry is to renew her wedding vows in a desperate attempt to save her marriage -- the actress almost split from husband Eric Benet because he cheated on her with model Julia Riley; however, the couple are determined to work on their relationship and save their troubled marriage.
