Pre-Raphaelite (1848 - 1854) The Pre-Raphaelite movement which actually came 400 years after Raphael's birth was a brotherhood of artists that were attempting to re-capture the style, simplicity and subject matter of the early Italian art preceding Raphael. These young English artists followed a set of structured aims to further their brotherhood, which many of their contemporaries believed were clearly anti-progressive and simply ludicrous. The Pre-Raphaelite movement was co-founded by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He felt that as an artist he needed to have a "fidelity to nature" that had been lost in art since Raphael. This young revolutionary group of painters quickly dissolved as they matured, and the Pre-Rapaelite movement ended as quickly as it began. Nevertheless, the ideals and philosophy of the movement have continued to emerge as other artists embrace the possibilities of the movement.
