Paul Brent Biography
Paul Brent is an artist whose watercolors of coastal life and nature have gained widespread recognition both nationally and internationally. His passion for creativity has led to expression both in fine art and in designs for functional and decorative objects. For all of his life, he has been intensely aware of his surroundings and his artwork reflects his wonder and admiration for scenes and objects of natural beauty.
Brent's original paintings are the source of open edition posters, limited edition lithographs and licensing programs with over 50 manufacturers who produce wallcoverings, textiles, note cards, bedding, shower curtains, towels, apparel, paper products, gift items, housewares, decorative home accessories and furniture. He has published over 300 print images and has sold over one million prints. His work is available through galleries and frame shops, as well as the internet. In addition to his publishing and licensing business, the artist and his wife operate a gallery he designed himself, located in the historic downtown area of Panama City, Florida. On exhibit are the artist's originals, prints and designs for the home as well as fine crafts by local and regional artists.
Paul Brent was born in Oklahoma in 1946. As a child in a small Oklahoma town, Brent loved to draw and paint. His mother, an elementary school teacher, kept the household well supplied with arts and crafts materials and his father, who taught science, had a wonderful library of picture books that were always a source for the young artist's imagination. When he was 13, his family moved to Long Beach, California. There, Brent attended high school and studied art at California State University at Long Beach. After two years, he transferred and studied architecture at the University of California where he received his undergraduate degree. He served as a Captain in the Air Force and while stationed in Panama City, he met his wife-to-be, Lana Jane Lewis. After leaving the service, the Brents spent a year and a half in California where he finished his Masters Degree at UC Berkeley. They returned to Panama City in 1973 to live permanently and to eventually raise their two sons.
After returning to Florida, the artist began a residential design business and later added interior design as well. His art career began with weekend shows in 1976 and in 1986 he launched his art publishing business. Lana Jane, who was President of a large supermarket and convenience store chain in the southeastern U.S., left to become president of Paul Brent Designer, Inc. in 1992. By managing sales, marketing, distribution, operations and publicity, she has freed her husband's time to create.
Brent is an affiliate artist with the LeMoyne Institute in Tallahassee, FL. His original work appears in many private and public collections throughout the United States. He has served on the Board of the Florida Arts Council as well as the Florida Humanities Council. Professionally, he is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, the Southern Watercolor Society, the Florida Watercolor Society and the Society of Illustrators in New York. In Panama City, he is on the board of directors of the Greater Downtown Association and Bay Arts Alliance.
