Biography: Family, Childhood, Acting Career
He was born Clinton Eastwood, Jr., on May 30, 1931, in San Francisco. It is appropriate that one of Eastwood's most memorable screen characters is the drifter who never knows where the next day will find him. The same can be said for Eastwood's early years. With the Depression wreaking havoc on the American economy, Eastwood's parents, Clinton and Ruth, found that steady employment for the man of the house was nonexistent. Therefore, the family had to move wherever Clint's father could secure a temporary job. This period was not easy for Eastwood's parents, and it was particularly difficult for Clint and his younger sister, Jean.

Eventually, Clint's father found steady employment with the Container Corporation of America in Oakland, California. Eastwood attended the Oakland Technical High School, and unlike other future rebel superstars like Steve McQueen and Marlon Brando, he proved to be a conscientious and successful student. He tried hard to please his parents, both of whom he respected a great deal. He placed great emphasis on being the best at whatever he did. This he attributed to a philosophy his father professed. It was often difficult to maintain close family ties in the Eastwood family. His mother had long sympathized with the plight of her children, and she tried very hard to give them some sort of family stability. For many years, she would send Clint and Jean to spend time on their grandmother's chicken ranch in Sunol, California. Eastwood spent his formative years living intermittently on this ranch, and these visits provided many of the fun times Eastwood enjoyed in those otherwise bleak years. He appreciated his parents' efforts then, and he still does.
