Summary: Meet Brad Pitt, Death in the flesh. He has come to collect Bill Parrish (Hopkins), a successful and wealthy communications maven approaching his 65th birthday. Joe Black, as Death comes to be known, is fascinated with the passionate words of advice Bill shares with his favourite daughter (Forlani) as well as the love he has inspired in those around him. As a result, he makes a Faustian deal with Bill: in exchange for a little more time with his loved ones, Bill must serve as Death's earthly guide.

While Meet Joe Black contains an affecting love story between Joe and Bill's daughter, it is the complex relationship between Joe and Bill that informs the intellectual and spiritual centre of this film. It is a curious premise, one that encourages the audience to wonder what they would do in such a situation. It also studies philosophical questions about how we conduct our lives despite having the knowledge of our mortality constantly tugging at our mental sleeves. Brest is brave to spend over three hours examining this issue.
